SMS Giveaway Day: May 2011 (Closed)
Yes, it’s that time of the year again when we mummies will leave the household chores alone, let the kids fend for themselves and plonk ourselves in front of the computer to peruse the humongous list that is the SMS Giveaway Day master list.
I had a blast doing the last one that I thought I’ll do it again. Again with a gazillion things happening around this time, I didn’t get to make something specially for this day. I hope you’ll forgive me.

Anyway, I’m giving away this goodie bag, I love owls and this one is Amy Schmiler’s On A Whim owl fabric. So cute.

It’s filled with all sorts of stuff, can you see a theme happening here?

First, up a huge (1.5 inch) covered button pony-o in Pat Bravo’s Art Gallery fabric, something nice and bright for your hair.

Then some more covered buttons in Art Gallery fabric (except for one), this time these are 7/8 inch push pins or thumbtacks. Great for brightening up any memo boards.

And if you run out of space on your memo board, you can always use these on the fridge to hold more coupons, notes, pictures etc or see how I’ve used mine.

You’ll also get this lavender scented bag to hang on your door or put in your drawer.

And last but not least, a pocket tissue cozy.
So what do you have to do to win? Very simply, help me find a present for my mum’s 60th birthday. What do you think I could make for her? I would love suggestions.
Giveaway closes 26 May 2011 (Australian time) – my mum’s birthday (yes, it will be a belated present).
I will pick the winner at random and everyone is welcome to enter as I’m happy to ship this anywhere in the world.
So thanks for visiting and have a Happy SMS Giveaway Day.

Does she like gardening or crafting, or have any other hobbies? In the past I’ve made my mum mix CDs, a felt basket to keep her yarn in (based on this: http://resurrectionfern.typepad.com/resurrection_fern/2009/12/how-to-make-a-reversible-felt-basket.html ), shrinky-dink earrings with line drawings in black sharpie (a lot classier than they sound), and an embroidered tea cosy.
Thank you for the gorgeous giveaway, and I’m sure that whatever you make for your mum she’ll love it! -
hi dear, i m from malaysia, so happen to came across your lovely blog. .
in my opinion, the best gift in the world to any mother is the quality time with her.. with full attention, love and respect. which sometimes we take for granted. However, any items handmade by you to her is also considered as time spending for her with love..

Wow that’s a harder question than one would think!! I think a special lap quilt is always a good gift because it’s something smaller that’s easy to cuddle under while watching TV or reading, rather than feeling like you have to change the whole scheme of your bedroom for the quilt. Good luck!
Cheers!

I know my mom is always thrilled with something I made… I bet that she would love anything you came up with! Does she like cooking? A cute new apron is always nice, especially from such a talented daughter.
PS: the link for your giveaway from the SMS website doesn’t appear to be working, I found you by searching google for your blog name. You might want to shoot them an email.

I love to give photos. Whether it be in a photo album (doing some lovely decorations on it could make it sort or handmade), making a scrapbook or filling up a frame with multiple photo spots. I think it shows a real effort and is giving the best thing of all, great reminders to fun and fabulous times.

How about making a custom fit skirt? I made one for my mum last christmas using the book “Sew what! Skirts”. She got to pick the fabric, design and shape. My mom just loves her new skirt and has been wearing it ever since. That way your present will also not be belated since you can give it to her as a gift coupon.

We just celebrated my mom’s 60th birthday a month ago. Her favorite thing is sea turtles. So I found a sea turtle print that was matted and framed at my local thrift store. I then took it out and let my family write on the matting wishing her a happy birthday. I then put it into a bag I had crocheted. She loved it! Thanks for the chance to win!

Put together a spa treatment basket and a date to do fun girl things together…pedicures and manicures; hair color or a gift certificate to the hair dresser to get her hair done; a facial; a loufah sponge; rose scented soap and $$$ for a new outfit and then make a date to go shopping with her and have lunch together. Those are the things she’ll love and cherish.

I cannot get over how adorable the goodie bag is! for your mother, you could always make her pins, or embroidery for a jacket or coat! I have seen others who love that! Of course you can go with matching curtains, pillows, or rugs that go with a certain room in her house! Other nifty household items such as cute chip clips can also accent the total gift!
-
There are so many great ideas here already, definitely spend time with her and shower her with love and affection. I also loved the idea of a memory quilt too. Or maybe a hand made dress made with some of those lovely fabrics or a skirt and blouse. I guess that would depend on what she enjoys wearing.

Great giveaway! I’d be delighted to win!
I think photos are always sweet. So I’d sew up a photo frame with great embellisments and stick in a sweet picture of the two of you together. If it’ll hang in a particular room you could also sew a pillow or a throw or something to match it.

I love this set, it’s so cute!!
I think for your mom’s 60th birthday you should make her either:
1. a purse- mom’s can never get enough of those espeically hand made by their baby
2. some of those super cute lavendar satchels to brighten up and destress her space or
3. a spa self-pamper package! pick up or sew up a robe, make some lavender packets, aromatherapy candles, a super soft or silky eye mask, some lotion and bath fizzies and you’re set!good luck and happy birthday to your mom!

Oh what a wonderful goodie bag! I bet if you mom hasn’t received any of these yet, this would be a good gift, my mom would like it!
I also like to make special hand crafted items for my mom. One year I made an apron with all the grandkids hand prints on it. Then this year for mothers day we got a simple patio rock and put the kids hand prints on each with their name. Something to remind her of her little grandbabies
Good luck! -

These are SOOOO sweet, thank you! If your mom likes tea make a tea cozy for her teapot and a mug rug for her teacup. If she likes cards/postcards make her a portfolio with pockets to store her favorites. If she likes to keep cozy make her a double-sided scarf with her favorite colored fabric. I hope that helps!

I love your blog & your projects! For your Mum’s Birthday–something very sweet & super thoughtful like a fabric covered Gift Book with photos of your Mum as a young child, then as a young Mum with you in photo, then a photo of your Mum with your children and so on. It could be a historical progression of love & family memories which she has given you & your family. Your Gift Book pages could be covered in fabric with meaningful embellishments from cover to back. Good luck to you!

what you could make for her would be what you make with her… at 60 we have all we need and what we don’t have we just go and buy… take time with her and make memories, they will be more precious to her and to you… My Mom and I made our first and last quilt together when she was going through her chemo..she was thrilled that we did it together.. after she passed I have that special quilt and one day it will be my son’s to remember the special ladies in his life.. Time spent together is the greatest gift you can give.

My mom loves sentimental gifts and one of the best I have given was an old window frame that I got my sister to clean up and then I went to a quilter at the Farmer’s Market and got her to fill the 4 squares with embroidered houses and in one square is says Peace be to this House. It was specially picked for her. I would definitely go with something sentimental because once they hit a certain age, they don’t really need things anymore.

I don’t know if you have them over there, but for my Mom’s 50th we sent her a big basket from Edible Arrangements. They make hand crafted floral arrangements out of fresh fruit. Some are dipped in chocolate, some have nuts sprinkled on top – so delicious! We couldn’t really give her a gift in person because we live across the country, but it was fun to send her something other than regular flowers.

How about some cute pictures/collages of her grandkids?? thanks for the giveaway! amy @ gasudimack@sbcglobal.net

Does she iron? I love this ironing board cover http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/01/quilted-ironing-board-cover.html#more

As an almost 60, myself, I am delighted with anything that my family makes for me but I can always use fresh table linens, hand towels for the guest bathroom, pot holders and dish towels. I would be thrilled to get a small quilt to hang in the front hall or my bedroom. I like pretty pajama pants, quilted obi belts, and tote bags. I would love a set of reusable grocery bags. Basically, I am thrilled that my family has put so much thought and care into a gift.
Tell her I said Happy B’day! -
As we are entering the cooler months i would be making her a soft and warm hot water bottle cover, perhaps some lavender sachets…a girl, young and old can never have enough lavender sachets if you ask me! They come in handy in all sorts of places. Enjoy your mothers Birthday celebrations, this is a special time and thank you for the giveaway!
-
What could you make your mum…for part of my mums 60th birthday gift I made her a tote bag from some fab fabric she had her eye on and a picnic rug to go inside of it. She now takes it for picnics when she has my kids for the day. Useful but quirky as I made it from some really bright fruity themed fabrics.

Whenever I give my mum anything related to my kids it is always a sucess. A photo of the kids in a beautiful frame or an album with drawings made by them are simple but sweet gifts. And I usually add a book as she loves reading.
You are giving away so many beautiful things, thanks for the chance!

I just made my mom a swing jacket for her birthday. I made it from home dec weight, so it has a sturdier finish, but still light weight enough for spring/fall. Also made her a little glasses pouch to match.

Thanks for this great giveaway! I love Amy’s fabric and that she gives back when you buy it…very cool! -

What a bounteous giveaway! I think you should make her this book pillow (or a similar one)! http://www.etsy.com/listing/61239344/reading-pillow-sewing-pattern?ref=em So nice!
-
Wow, that is some goodie bag!. As for Mum, well if she is like my mum anything you make will be a treasure to her, but I try to think of the things that give my mum a thrill..she loves table linen so I’d make her a table runner for instance. Something that incorporates her gorgeous grandchildren might be a safe bet too. So a placemat or wall hanging with their art work incorporated. I’m sure you heart will guide you to the best choice.
-
Hmmm, I think for my mom it would have to be anything for gardening, flowers, planters, books/magazines about it, etc. I like to make and put together my own planters and giveaway…not sure if that’s the kinda thing you’re looking to make.
Love your giveaway! Thanks for the chance at this

I’m making my walking buddy’s mom a boxy bag at my friend’s request – my friend provided me with some fabric that her mom loves, I’ll make the bag for her, and my friend will tuck in some goodies she knows her mom will like – CHOCOLATES! I don’t think anybody can have too many zippered bags for keeping their goodies organized!
-

My mom was bragging just last night that my brother sent her a card for mother’s day with a hand written note of appreciation in it. She seemed quite impressed. Of course, you might do that sort of thing already, so it wouldn’t be as much of a gift, but it was a thought.
Thanks so much for the chance to win all the little goodies. I will have fun using those should I win. -

Maybe a memory quilt … ??? Or a photo book of your greatest memories together?
Or just a book where you fill each page with a thing that you love about her … and maybe a photo …Thanks for the giveaway! Come and enter mine if you like – you could win some custom-made buttons!

What a happy little assortment! I do love Amy Schimler, too…
It might be too late for this, but I was read recently about a present someone was putting together for her grandma. She collected newspapers and magazines and Sears catalogs from when her Grandma was young. I was surprised that you can find that stuff on eBay, but you can – Sears catalog in almost any year. Anyway, I thought that would be a cool present for someone to have a nice trip down memory lane.

i like making kits- makeup kits, where you can make a cute bag, maybe a roll-up for makeup brushes, and then a buy a few small makeup items to stuff in it; or you could make a “serenity” pack that is stuffed with an eye pillow, some bath salts, etc. i think it can be made very personal, and really fun to receive! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
-
over 10 years ago i made my grandmother a bag using a Favourite Things pattern “Carpet Bag” and she STILL loves it and uses it whenever she goes to visit family or goes to the hospital. when she could see, it was the perfect size to fit an afghan in progress, and now that she can’t knit anymore, it’s the perfect size for an overnight bag. i highly recommend the pattern! i’m trying to find my copy, i was thinking i’d make myself one out of enchino to take to guild meetings!
thanks so much for the chance to win!

I think you should get her an “experience” rather than a “thing” – like go to a cooking class together or roller blading or sky diving or look at local night classes and pick something unusal!
Its hard suggesting an idea when one doesn’t know the personalities involved! Thank you for being so generous in this giveaway. -

One thing my sister and I have talked about doing for our mother’s 60th birthday is to take 12in squares of fabric for the two of us and my sister’s little girl to paint before I make a quilt of them. We’ve also talked about making something using just my niece’s artwork
Good luck with the birthday gift.
