Coasters with the mostess

You may have caught a glimpse of my current work in progress (WIP) here and using the left over fabric and this tutorial from Flossie Teacakes, I made some quilted drink coasters.

And what’s so cool about these coasters are the self bound edges. Not only do the edges give you a funky border (especially if you’re using contrasting fabrics) but they also give you perfectly straight edges which I love.

Now Flossie Teacakes’ tutorial uses 3 layers of batting/wadding, I just used a single layer of what I had leftover from this project – some polyester wadding that had a high loft.

I’m amazed at how much the wadding had compressed after quilting and ironing.

I may need to purchase a quarter inch quilting foot with guide rail as doing the spirals with my normal presser foot was a bit hit and miss – I’m not a big fan of uneven spirals.

And yes, I managed to bind the edges by hand on all six coasters but next time, I’m thinking machine stitching to save time. Anyone for a cup of tea?
beautiful! i love these and the fabrics you chose. i NEED to learn: wadding, binding, ahhhh…great job!
