Wow, it’s been a while since I last blogged.

This is the reason why.  My son (who is 4 months) doesn’t sleep terribly much during the day and so when he’s awake, he wants us to play with him.  Can’t really blame him, it must be boring to stare at the ceiling all day, right?  He loves looking around which means he likes to be upright which means I’m carrying him around so he can look around.  Ahhhh…..the life of a baby!!

Anyway, back to the knitted scarf hat which I started a week ago.  Now this was suppose to be a project which I could easily whip up in a day but ahem…it took me nearly a week to complete it.  Why?  Well, it seems I still need to master the skill of joining the stitches without it being twisted when knitting in the round.  Then after a few false starts, I finally got away knitting happily until I realised…

it was too big, like way too big.  But where did I go wrong, didn’t I do my calculations before I started knitting?  Err…well, it seems that I forgot one crucial measurement -  my daughter’s head circumference.  I had assumed she would have an average 3.5 year old head size, and so I knitted the largest size (for 2 years and up) and assumed that to fit her.  But I guess I assumed wrong.

Only one thing to do – start frogging the whole piece (rip it, rip it) and start all over again.  I ended up knitting the 6-12 month old size and they do say that small heads are hereditary because the hat also fitted me!

So here it is – the knitted hat scarf which is still a tad big.  I did find this from knittinghelp.com and may explain why my gauge was probably out.

Your gauge is probably different when working in the round than when working flat. This is because people usually purl at a different tension than they knit. For this reason, you cannot use a gauge swatch that was knit “flat” (back and forth with knit and purl rows) on a circular item where you’ll only be knitting.
